Box Score 2 BOSTON, MA-The Saint Joseph's College Monks (15-21, 7-5) came up short in the first game of their Friday doubleheader, falling 5-3 to Emmanuel College (13-21, 11-3) before taking game two in eight innings 7-5.Â
Game 1: Emmanuel 5, Saint Joseph's 3
Emmanuel got off to a fast start, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first. The Saints kicked things off with a ground-rule double that brought in a run, followed by back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Saint Joseph's responded quickly, as Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) launched a solo homer to left in the top of the first. Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, ME) added another solo shot in the fourth, and Sylvia Foley's (Scarborough, ME) sac fly in the sixth brought in Tirrell for the Monks' third run.
The Saints picked up an unearned run in the third after reaching on an error and scored on a sac fly. The Saints scored again in the fifth to cap off Emmanuel's scoring.
The Monks tallied six hits and three runs. Pitcher Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) took the loss for Saint Joseph's, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits over six innings.Â
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 7, Emmanuel 5
In the second game of Friday's doubleheader the Monks pulled off a late comeback to beat Emmanuel College 7-5 in extra innings.
Sylvia Foley led the charge for the Monks, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Emmanuel saw home runs from two players, who each drove in two runs.
Emmanuel opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning, but Saint Joseph's responded in the second with a sacrifice fly from Anna Gilbert (Gray, ME) to score Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME). The Monks took a 4-1 lead in the third thanks to Foley's three-run blast.
Emmanuel chipped away with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to tie things up at 4-4. After Saint Joseph's briefly regained the lead in the fifth, Emmanuel evened the score again with a solo homer in the sixth, sending the game into extras.
Using the international tiebreaker rule in the eighth, Clara Christiansen (Franklin, ME) started on second base. Foley followed with a single, and sacrifice flies from Carpenter and Gilbert brought home the go-ahead runs.
Rylee Page (Somersworth, NH) picked up the win in relief for the Monks, throwing five solid innings and allowing just one run.Â
