The 2002–03 Saint Joseph’s men’s basketball team made history during the program’s transition from decades of NAIA success to NCAA Division III, competing as an independent and earning the first NCAA Tournament berth in school history. In the Monks’ first year of NCAA eligibility, they secured a coveted Pool B at-large selection—one of only five awarded nationwide—cementing Saint Joseph’s place among the region’s elite. Led by Rick Simonds in his 23rd and final season as head coach, the Monks posted a 20–5 record and surged into the postseason having won 10 of their final 11 games. In the 23 years since, only two other Saint Joseph’s teams—2006 baseball and 2019 women’s basketball—have earned NCAA Division III Tournament at-large berths.
